Though management measures are in place to control harvest, little is known about these populations and most are severely depleted. Orange roughy is not resilient to fishing pressure, taking 20 to 30 years to reach reproductive maturity and living 100 to 150 years. In addition, orange roughy are harvested with trawl nets in and around sensitive coral seamount ecosystems. These fisheries are not currently sustainable.
